The Software Process : Managing Projects

CLARIFY ROLES AND RIGHTS OF PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

All members of the project team should agree on common goals for the software and the roles of group members. It is very important to have a complete list of contributors and their roles. All original contributors should be included on the software submission form.

Once your group has decided its goals, you should share them with all new collaborators on the project, both externally and internally. The best practice is to send an email to the new contributors outlining the project goals and ultimate distribution plan. You can also copy the TTO on these emails so that we can keep a record of their participation.

Should the software be commercialized, all significant contributors should receive some share of royalties that the University receives. The formula for determining percent authorship and sharing royalties should be decided at the beginning and communicated with the TTO and all contributors. Some options are: years on the project, modules contributed, lines of code or a combination of several measures.
