The Undergraduate Technology
Partners project supported nine students from the Computer
Science Department at the Boulder campus during the summer
of 2002 to pursue projects on the use of technology to improve the lives of
people with cognitive disabilities. Students worked on the following projects:
- Technology Selection
for the Association for Community Living of Boulder County (ACL) - Assisted
staff at ACL by updating their custom-developed database to track volunteer
hours, recruit new volunteers, and identify potential donors. Students also
helped ACL staff identify appropriate software for their projected Technology
Clubhouse.
- Enhancements for Web2Gether
- Worked with Web2gether
staff to create Web facilities to allow teachers to create and participate
in online discussion groups on themes of their choosing, and easily exchange
messages with other participants.
- Online Picture Dictionary
- Created a Web facilitiy that allows teachers to search an online library
of pictures by curriculum area and content keywords. The Picture Dictionary
will be integrated into the Web2Gether system.
- Trainable Image
Classifier - Worked with staff to implement a new machine learning algorithm.
This "location aware" application can assist individuals with
cognitive disabilities by helping them navigate and providing them with
timely prompts.
- Computer Games with
Single Click Interfaces - Created a hockey game with controls adaptable
for persons with disabilities. Adjustments can also be made to the software
to allow for different levels of motor control.
