Luna Insight: Common Software Platform

In 2005 the Digital Asset Management Task Group on Infrastructure recommended Insight, by Luna Imaging, as the software that units across the CU system could use to create digital collections and easily deliver them to faculty, students, and staff. Insight is a software system designed to ingest, store, manage, and display centralized collections of digital objects such as images, video, and sound files.

Insight’s great strength lies in its flexibility. Insight’s benefits to collection managers include its cross-platform operability, its scalability from small to large collections, and its support of audio, video, 3D images, and multi-page documents. Insight software offers a full suite of presentation tools, facilitates the personal collections of faculty, and supports searching across collections containing different metadata fields. Other benefits for collections managers include Insight’s ability to use existing descriptive data from other programs or allow for cataloging directly into Insight, its capacity to control access to copyrighted collections, and its functionality in a variety of technical environments (UNIX, Windows, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.).

CU units that adopt Insight provide their end-users with the benefits of cross-collection searching and a single software platform to learn. Because Insight allows multiple departments to share digital resources in teaching and research, it creates opportunities for cost savings on digital content while providing more users access to more digital content.
