TTO Invites Applicants for Patent Administrator Position
Title: Patent Administrator
Position Summary: The Patent Administrator works closely with Licensing Officers, patent counsel, inventors, and industrial licensees to ensure proper management of patent prosecution. The position requires excellent communication and organization skills, decision-making skills, the ability to prioritize and monitor multiple deadlines, and excellent interpersonal skills to work with a diverse constituency of higher education and business personnel. Additionally, the ability to understand complex legal, scientific, and technical subjects is necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Patent Administration

Review and assess invention disclosures with Licensing Officers to determine patentability.

Select and engage patent counsel for new projects and maintain current list of attorneys with which to work.
Work with Licensing Officers and patent counsel to maintain positive relations and to determine patenting strategy throughout the patenting process.

Monitor all patent prosecution and maintenance deadlines and work with Licensing Officers and patent counsel to meet said deadlines.

Update database regarding patent prosecution.

Maintains patent prosecution files.

Review attorney invoices for accuracy and fairness, matching invoices with specific disclosures and patent applications.

Work with outside counsel and Licensing Officers to register copyrights and trademarks.
B. Extra- and Intra-Office Communication

Keep inventors informed and educated about the patent process and the status of patent applications.

Keep Licensing Officers, Compliance Administrator, and Assistant Vice President informed and educated about the patent process and the status of patent applications.

Use a variety of software applications to produce diverse documents including correspondence, reports, and spreadsheets.
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or University.

Proficiency in using a Windows-based PC.

Familiarity with databases and the ability and willingness to learn additional database software and/or functionalities.

Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software, email communication, and the Internet.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent organizational and management skills.

Familiarity with U.S. patent law and the administrative procedures of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as knowledge of foreign patent prosecution and the Patent Cooperation Treaty.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
J.D. or other advanced degree or professional experience (1-3 years) in the area of patent administration or patent prosecution.

The ability to understand and communicate technical or scientific ideas.
