Title of Position:
Technology Transfer Office (TTO) Life Sciences Summer Intern. The mission of the CU Technology Transfer Office is to aggressively pursue, protect, package, and license to business the intellectual property generated from the research enterprise and to serve faculty, staff, and students seeking to create such intellectual property.

Position Summary:
The position will be to conduct commercial feasibility analyses for new discoveries made by CU inventors and, in certain cases, assist faculty entrepreneurs in building successful companies from research discoveries made at CU. This can best be accomplished by facilitating interaction between inventors, TTO personnel, patent attorneys, and constituencies in the academic, business, and finance communities to surround promising opportunities with world-class expertise.
The work product is a written analysis of the most appropriate commercial path for a given invention, or a determination that the invention is not commercially viable. In some cases, the analysis will result in the creation of new companies and the intern will be asked to spearhead the development of a business plan.
Overview of the Office:
The TTO is staffed by 15 professionals. The office provides strategic direction and IP management support to research investigators on the CU campuses. Technology transfer licensing associates work with inventors and with companies interested in licensing CU's inventions. A business development group works with inventors and with entrepreneurs, investors, and others in the start-up business community to create new companies based on CU inventions.
Primary Functions and Responsibilities:
Summer interns will be assigned several technologies, and will work closely with CU research scientists, TTO Licensing Associates and external advisors to move the technology towards commercialization.
- Perform commercial feasibility analysis and write business plans.
- Formulate license marketing strategies.
- Perform market and competitive analyses on technologies to identify potential licensees and technology value.
- Perform patentability analyses by examining the existing science, technical feasibility, and commercial viability.
Reporting:
Interns will report directly to TTO Licensing Associates
Required Qualifications:
- Candidates should be enrolled in an MBA program. A focus on Entrepreneurship is preferred.
- Candidates should be a highly motivated "self starter" and possess solid analytical abilities and communication skills.
- An undergraduate or graduate degree in a Life Sciences discipline or background in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry is strongly preferred.
- Candidate should have a keen interest in emerging technology and a willingness to work with complex technical concepts.
- Candidates must be a current student in the CU system and be willing to work at the Fitzsimmons campus.
Compensation:
$17.23/hour. Position is full time, beginning on May 23, 2005 and ending on August 5, 2005.
