Title of Position: Director, New Business Development
Department: Technology Transfer, Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research System Administration, Professional Exempt Staff

Position Summary:
Provide professional expertise in working with faculty on all four campuses to identify promising new business and start-up opportunities arising from intellectual property invented at C.U.

Overview of the Office:
The position will report to the Assistant Vice President for Technology Transfer under the direction and coordination of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research at the University of Colorado. The Assistant Vice President is the Principal Technology Transfer Officer at the University of Colorado.

Overview of the Position:
The Director is responsible for facilitating the creation of new businesses from investigator-generated intellectual property by working directly with faculty inventors to build businesses, while serving as liaison to internal and external resources (academic and business communities) to ensure C.U. start-ups receive the maximum amount of help needed to succeed.

Primary Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional expertise in working with faculty on all four campuses to identify promising start-up opportunities arising from intellectual property invented at C.U.
  • Be the point person in licensing negotiations with entrepreneurial companies and financial groups, formulate and draft licensing agreements and ensure that the start-up license meets the necessary university requirements.
  • Develop appropriate operational procedures and policies for new business creation (particularly those business entities in which faculty have an ownership interest) and providing the interface between internal licensing assistance resources (legal, finance, administrative, public relations, students) and external resources (venture capital, incubators, management consulting, accounting) and alternative funding sources (SBIR/STTR etc.) to harness the talent necessary to ensure C.U. start-ups maximize their opportunity for success.
  • Work closely with Technology Transfer Office personnel (compliance, patent administration, legal, licensing) and faculty to build an IP portfolio of core technologies suitable for start-up licensing.
  • Represent the activities of the Office to faculty, administration, and the business community to educate the community on this new function and solicit support and participation.
  • The Director, in conjunction with the AVP, should represent the Technology Transfer System Office on boards and in groups related to new venture creation; including, Colorado incubators, entrepreneurial associations, etc.
  • Serve as internal point person for exploring and possibly spearheading development of an IP venture fund to provide start-up capital to faculty-created new ventures.

Required Qualifications:

  • MBA or equivalent degree required
  • Excellent skills in written and verbal communication, and organizational management skills
Preferred Qualifications:

The Director should have a working knowledge of, and track record in, new business creation, technicalities of early-stage company formation, financing alternatives, technology transfer, and intellectual property protection. The ideal candidate will have worked as a business professional in academia, technology transfer, and the private sector, and be knowledgeable concerning the business and legal practices necessary to facilitate the process.
