Summer Technology Commercialization Program in Full Swing

July 14, 2003

Boulder, CO - The University of Colorado's Technology Transfer Office has launched its second summer of the "Colorado Technology Commercialization Partnership (CTCP)". The program is an initiative supported by the TTO, the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship and the Colorado Institute of Technology. The purpose of the program is to expedite the process of technology commercialization by forming teams to examine faculty inventions coming out of CU's four campuses. The teams are lead by student interns and TTO staff and engage volunteer advisors from the Front-Range professional business community. These advisors include prominent IP attorneys, venture capitalists, seasoned business professionals, and scientific advisors.

Last summer marked the pilot program for the CTCP and the results were promising. The TTO hired four MBA students from CU-Boulder who were able to examine over two dozen technology inventions, with a few start-up companies and licensing deals as the most notable outcomes. This summer's program has expanded in scope and size. The TTO is employing eight students who have more diverse backgrounds and fields of expertise. The students range from the CU-Boulder MBA program to a student with a masters in public heath at UCD who is also seeking a MBA at UCD, a student with MS in environmental studies from CIRES, and an undergraduate student. The plan is to expand the breadth and knowledge base for extracting more invention disclosures from faculty researchers as well as put together solid commercialization strategies.

The program anticipates a greater number of invention disclosures coming out of faculty departments previously not served, and an increased output of opportunity assessments, market strategies and business plans written for promising inventions. The CTCP program runs through August 6th. For more information on getting involved in the CTCP, contact Kristen Meissner at Kristen.Meissner@colorado.edu.
