Expression Analysis to Study Disease Pathogenesis:

Microarray expression analysis has enabled the simultaneous examination of the expression levels of thousands of humans and mouse genes. The technology derives from application of computer microchip technology to the development of high throughput biological assays. This powerful technology has enabled researchers to perform experiments on the order of weeks, which had formerly taken years. Moreover, these experiments have generated new hypotheses, which can be tested in quick order. In addition, the ability to define selected diseases by their transcriptional profile, as well as the prognostic implications for treatment, represent potent novel tools for researchers and clinicians.

In the current seminar we will discuss briefly the techniques of microarray expression analysis and site various examples from our own experience and from the literature regarding the use of expression analysis in the advancement of the understanding of selected human diseases.
