Ellen Winner, Esq., Greenlee, Winner and Sullivan, P.C.
Ellen Winner is a partner in a boutique Boulder intellectual property law firm. She has more than twenty years experience practicing patent law and has addressed national organizations on the topic of business method patents.

Presentation
Business method patents continue to be a topic of debate. Proponents argue that they are an important means of encouraging innovation because there is little incentive to invest in new business methods if they can be copied by competitors. Detractors contend that they stifle innovation and competition by granting monopolies over methods that any business should be able to practice.

Ellen Winner will discuss the fundamentals of business method patents, explore the debate surrounding their pros and cons, and offer her own view on whether they are a valid and valuable form of intellectual property. Ms. Winner will examine these issues with a focus on how they pertain to Universities and faculty members who have, or may in the future, seek to protect innovative business methods.
