Game-changing gifts from the Arthur E. and Helen K. Johnson Foundation

Game-changing gifts from the Arthur E. and Helen K. Johnson Foundation

Every contribution to the University of Colorado matters. Private support helps us add value to world-class teaching, research, creative work and community service across our campuses.

Then there are those contributions that elevate CU in profound ways. The Denver-based Arthur E. and Helen K. Johnson Foundation recently provided grants to CU that are game changers in two areas critical to our state and nation: mental health and nursing. The Johnson Foundation, which has had a relationship with CU since 1979, provided $10 million to the Depression Center at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus and $8 million to the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at our Colorado Springs campus.

In recognition of the vision and generosity of the Johnson Foundation, the CU Board of Regents voted unanimously to name the entities the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Depression Center and the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Mental health issues are significant in our society, and the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Depression Center is at the forefront of research and patient care in the field. Much of their great work can be attributed to time and effort of another great friend of CU, George Wiegers, who has provided insight, energy and funding to start the center. A key part of that mission is addressing the stigma that is sometimes attached to mental health issues. With the strong foundation George helped build, a top-notch faculty and staff, and now the support of the Johnson Foundation, the center will take its place among the top entities of its type in the country.

Likewise, the Johnson grant will help the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at UCCS build on its century-old legacy of excellence in nursing and health care. The grant will be used to hire more nursing educators, which will help ease a bottleneck in the preparation of nurses caused by a small number of nursing educators and an increasing demand from students wishing to study in the field. The grant will also provide faculty and students with resources to keep them abreast of the latest developments in the field.

We are most appreciative of the confidence the Johnson Foundation has in CU and its people. We believe their generous contributions will pay dividends to our communities, state and nation for years to come.
