Federal Task Force on Higher Education Regulation
Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet asked me to serve on the Task Force on Federal Regulation of Higher Education, established in fall 2013, to consider the amount and nature of regulation on higher education, with a focus on regulation stemming from the Department of Education. The bipartisan committee was established by Sens. Bennet, Alexander, Mikulski and Burr and comprised a group of 15 of my colleague higher education leaders who worked for more than a year. The task force recently released its report and recommendations and presented them to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Feb. 24.
The task force was a great opportunity to reduce bureaucracy and move forward an important discussion – examining the value of the significant amount of federal regulation imposed on higher education institutions, and simplifying the approach. Streamlining regulation on higher education will help colleges and universities realize efficiencies and better serve students. I appreciate the leadership of the senators in this effort. I also want to thank fellow Coloradan Bill Armstrong, president of Colorado Christian University, for his work on the task force and insight throughout this process.
