A boon for the Colorado Springs community and CU's School of Medicine

We received good news earlier this summer. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the national accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to an M.D. degree, notified the University of Colorado School of Medicine (SOM) that it can proceed with plans to open a branch in Colorado Springs.

The branch will create new health and wellness opportunities for the El Paso County community, enhance collaboration and educational opportunities at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) and, as in similar clinical settings, provide our third- and fourth-year SOM students skills in specialties such as obstetrics and emergency care from doctors and other health care providers.

We will be able to expand the number of students admitted to the SOM M.D. program from 160 to 184 next year. The 24 additional students will be on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus beginning in 2014 and will perform their clinical training through the Colorado Springs branch beginning in April 2016.

UCCS has been a strong supporter of this effort and will play a key role in the branch. The branch will provide UCCS opportunities for interprofessional health care education with the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences. It may also offer research opportunities for faculty and students.

We anticipate that some of the students who train in Colorado Springs will stay or return there to practice. The opportunity to both practice and teach medical students might attract physicians to the community.

Under the terms of the successful bid to lease Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, University of Colorado Health will provide the School of Medicine $3 million a year for 40 years to support the medical school branch in Colorado Springs. Student tuition and philanthropy will also be necessary to support the program.

The branch will add to the educational prestige of an area that already is home to UCCS, Colorado College, Air Force Academy, other colleges and universities and the community college system, and brings a new dimension of the CU education system to this part of Colorado.
