Groundbreaking marks historic moment for CU Denver
On Jan. 31, I had the honor of taking part in an important moment in CU Denver history. That morning, about 150 local leaders and supporters gathered to break ground on the first building on the Auraria Campus to be entirely owned and operated by CU Denver. This new academic building will be 100 percent dedicated to our students, faculty and staff, and provide an exclusive home for CU Denver on the campus, which we share with Community College of Denver and Metro State.
The building also enhances our presence in downtown Denver; it will further our connections with the business community and provide more opportunities for our students.
I have long known the value of the Auraria Campus and the opportunities created by its urban home.
When the Auraria Campus opened in January 1977, it was intended to serve 15,000 students. Today, there are about three times that many students and the population is growing.
The 146,000-square-foot, $60.5 million structure will be completed by August 2014. This building will substantially improve the experience for CU Denver students, providing them one-stop access to important services. It will include space for student affairs, financial services, admission, registrar, classrooms and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It will also help address one of the critical needs on this campus: classroom space.
