Spotlight on Alumni:
CU in London for the Olympic Games

Excitement surrounding the 2012 London Olympic Games has grown along with Team USA's medal count. And as we cheer for the United States, we're cheering a little extra for the outstanding efforts of CU alumni.
Colorado Springs is home of the U.S. Olympic Committee's headquarters and its flagship training center, the U.S. Olympic Complex. So it's only fitting that the University of Colorado Colorado Springs has produced some fine Olympians.

Matt Emmons, who earned a master of business administration degree in 2006, won bronze in the 50-meter rifle three position on Monday. Emmons took part in the men's air rifle and rifle competitions. Previously, he earned the silver medal in the men's 50 meter rifle competition in the 2008 Beijing Games and a gold medal in the 2004 Athens Games.

Other UCCS alumni in London include:

  • Clarissa Chun, women's wrestling, graduated from UCCS in May 2005 with a bachelor of art in communication. She shared the bronze medal in the women's 48-kilogram wrestling freestyle April 8, giving the U.S. its first wrestling medal of the London Games. Chun finished fifth overall in the Beijing Games.
  • Frank Thompson, men's skeet shooting, graduated from UCCS in May 2011 with a bachelor of science in business. In his first Olympic qualifying round Thompson scored 71 out of 75, but ended up finishing seventh overall.

Six CU Buffs competed in the games, including Kara Goucher (Psych'01) in the marathon, Dathan Ritzenhein (Hist'06) in the 10,000-meter race and Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (Econ, PolSci'09) in the 1,500-meter race. Three alumni-to-be also competed, including seniors Emma Coburn, who ran a personal best 9:23.54 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase finals, finishing ninth; Shalaya Kipp, steeplechase; and Flora Duffy, triathlon, competing for Bermuda.
