Honoring a Colorado icon

When Tilman "Tillie" Bishop announced earlier this year that he will not run for a second term on the CU Board of Regents, it signaled the end of more than 38 years of distinguished public leadership. In addition to his 6-year term on the board, Tillie served the Western Slope with integrity and distinction in the Colorado legislature for 28 years. On July 24, the University of Colorado and the Grand Junction Lion's Club honored Tillie for his outstanding service to the people and the state of Colorado.

The luncheon ceremony at Two Rivers Convention Center in Grand Junction drew some 250 admirers and supporters of Tillie and Pat, his wife of 60 years. CU Regent Stephen Ludwig read a resolution from Gov. John Hickenlooper acknowledging Tillie's service to Colorado's Western Slope. The governor declared July 24, 2012, Tilman "Tillie" Bishop Day.

Tillie was elected to the CU Board of Regents in 2006, representing the 3rd Congressional District. During his term, he has been instrumental in implementing high standards and establishing CU as one of the most respected institutions in the state and nation.

Tillie Bishop has thoughtfully embraced the challenges faced by the University of Colorado and public higher education. When his term ends in January 2013, his legacy and the standards he introduced to the board and the state of Colorado will continue.
