When I became president of the University of Colorado in 2008, I recognized that we had fallen behind in an area imperative to our success: engaging with you, our constituents. We have initiated several university communication projects the past year and your response has been immediate and immense. Your insights have been helpful to me and to the university, and have been instrumental as we begin to shape our future.

In spring 2011, we began producing this newsletter once a month and leapt from a distribution base of about 80,000 to nearly 300,000. The emails we have received in response are a strong indication of the passion and support you share for our university.

One year ago, I introduced our Twitter and Facebook accounts in this newsletter. Combined, we now have more than 2,000 followers keeping track of the university on these evolving platforms. These have been important tools in staying in touch with you, our supporters, and enabling you to engage with us. And now we also have photos on Flickr site.

The response to our CU Advocates program, launched in October 2012, has been substantial. Some 1,800 of you have answered the call to engage with us and to spread the good news about our institution and the importance of higher education to Colorado and beyond. Hundreds have taken part in our forums that have featured educational opportunities and discussions about the challenges faced by CU, as well as events such as CU Advocacy Day at the Capitol. There are myriad ways to advocate for – and to volunteer on behalf of – the university. We have available to you all the tools you need to get involved. Those of you who haven't joined CU Advocates can do so here.

Earlier this year, we launched CU Link, an online community where CU alumni, donors and friends may update their profiles, search the CU directory, and identify what email and online newsletters they prefer to receive. Already more than 30,000 of you have gotten involved.

All these tools help us engage you – and we're not stopping there. We're confident emerging technologies will further allow us to reach people like you who are critical to the university's success. We have lots to tell you and you have important information to provide us. Thank you for sharing.
