Class of 2012 goes the distance at CU Anschutz Medical Campus

The CU School of Medicine Class of 2012 is the first graduating class to have spent its entire four years on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Previous classes split time between the CU Anschutz Medical Campus and CU's old health sciences campus at Ninth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The growth this state-of-the-art medical facility has enjoyed since its inception is mind-boggling.

For instance, in addition to the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center opening in May, the University of Colorado Hospital recently cut the ribbon on its $20 million expansion of the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, allowing UCH to care for 60 percent more cancer patients. The School of Dental Medicine's clinical expansion includes 66 new dental operating rooms, student learning spaces and offices on two different floors.

The growth continues. Construction has begun on the $800 million Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which borders the east side of the campus. The 182-bed medical center will employ approximately 2,000 people and serve approximately 82,700 veterans.

Everywhere you look across the campus, construction cranes dot the skyline. While not a particularly scenic addition to the horizon, these cranes mean great things as the CU Anschutz Medical Campus continues to grow and fulfill the needs of not only our state's aging baby boomers, but the needs of our children and grandchildren.
