On the road to wellness

From left, Professor Jim Hill, Ted Harms, executive director of the Anschutz Foundation, and President Bruce D. Benson.
The same day national media reported that obesity rates in the United States are expected to increase from one-third of adults today to nearly 42 percent by 2030, CU took an important step toward addressing the issue. On Tuesday, we celebrated the grand opening of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. The center builds on the campus's focus on education, research and clinical excellence while placing a particular focus on disease prevention and outreach. It was made possible by a generous contribution by Philip Anschutz and the Anschutz Family Foundation. Members of the family and the foundation were on hand to help us open the wonderful facility. CU Professor Jim Hill, one of the nation's most respected nutritionists and a leader in the fight against the obesity epidemic, will guide the effort. Obesity is a major factor in heart disease, diabetes and other diseases. It adds an estimated $150 billion to health-care costs in the US. At the grand opening, he advanced the ambitious goal that Colorado would become a national leader in the fight against obesity by reducing the state's obesity rate by 10 percent by 2022. Hill's enthusiasm is infectious, and the new center he leads will be in the vanguard of the movement for a healthier state and nation.
