Merck grants UCD student teachers a mountain of educational opportunities

Our collaborations with the business and health communities and the trust those institutions have in our university have consistently provided remarkable opportunities for our students and researchers. Recently, Merck, a company working toward global health through innovative medicines, therapies and consumer health products, awarded a grant of $900,000 to the University of Colorado Foundation Inc. to support the XSci: Experiential Science Education Research Collaborative, as well as other initiatives.

The collaborative, under way in the School of Education & Human Development at CU Denver, funds the development of a model for experiential learning that positively affects teacher identity. While XSci has previously taken teachers to Africa, including a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro four times, the summer 2012 trip marks a milestone for the experiential learning program, enabling 15 Colorado teachers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and go on safari.

The grant includes a national website for experiential learning information dissemination and interaction, a national conference on experiential learning in Denver in 2014, and development of XSci satellites in other states.

The idea is to give teachers unparalleled experiences in the scientific world and to help transfer that excitement to their students. The enthusiasm among our CU Denver students is palpable. Partnering with Merck is one more way CU is advancing the teaching experience and, ultimately, the education of our K-12 students.
