Pac-12 Travels
The Colorado Buffaloes football team's inaugural foray into the Pac-12 Conference was challenging. Our new coaching staff is rebuilding the team and we faced several programs that reside in the upper echelon of college football. I am confident that Coach Jon Embree, his staff and players will rise to the challenge in the coming years.
However, we were quite pleased with one aspect of our membership in the Pac-12. We hosted events for alumni, parents and friends in each Pac-12 city where the Buffs played. The response was overwhelming. At Stanford, nearly 900 people attended our pregame event (including one notable Stanford alumnus, John Elway). Crowds typically exceeded 500 at Husky Stadium, the Rose Bowl and Sun Devil Stadium. CU has more than 50,000 alumni in the Pac-12 footprint (compared with about 11,000 in Big 12 states) and it's important we connect with them. California is our largest source of non resident students, so we were able to visit many parents and prospective students there. We're also seeing a new crop of visitors in Boulder and a portion of them will certainly consider CU for themselves, their children or grandchildren.
We are considering trips around basketball games and will also hit the road again next year for away football games in the Pac-12. We expect that as our program continues to build toward success, we will see more and more alumni, friends and prospective students and their parents. And while football tends to get the spotlight, let's not forget that the first two championships ever won in the Pac-12 went to the CU men's and women's cross-country teams.
