A wonderful addition to CU's downtown Denver presence

A wonderful addition to CU's downtown Denver presence

I first became engaged with the Auraria Campus in 1982 when Jerry Wartgow, who ran the campus, asked me to help start the Auraria Foundation to raise money for buildings and scholarships. Growth has been the constant at the campus ever since. Originally designed for about 15,000 students, it now has three times that.

That's one reason for the significance of the opening this semester of the CU Denver Student Commons Building, the first building on the campus (which we share with Metro State and Community College of Denver) exclusive to CU Denver. The 146,000-square-foot building will be our signature building at Auraria and will help create a sense of community among students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Denver community.

In recent years the Auraria Campus has moved to the concept of academic neighborhoods for each institution. The Student Commons Building, with its prominent location along Speer Boulevard, serves as the front door for CU Denver's neighborhood. It also links Auraria to our presence downtown along Lawrence and Larimer streets.

Most important, it will serve the more than 14,000 CU Denver students extremely well. It provides a variety of classrooms, large lecture halls and flexible academic space to meet future needs. It creates a better student experience and more educational opportunities, along with a one-stop shop for previously scattered student services, including admissions, student affairs, financial services and disability services.

An important part of the college experience is creating a sense of pride and community. As the campus celebrates its 40th year, the Student Commons Building will contribute greatly to the community and identity of one of the leading urban universities in the country.
