New leader for the Buffaloes

GeorgeWe were pleased last month to welcome back Rick George as CU-Boulder’s athletic director. Rick was assistant athletic director for football operations for CU from 1987-91 and was one of those responsible for recruiting many of the players on the great teams from those years, including the 1990 National Champions.

He has had a diverse, high-impact career in athletics, including stints in the athletics departments at Vanderbilt University and the University of Illinois. He also served as executive vice president and chief of operations for the PGA Tour before his most recent job, president of business operations for the Texas Rangers in Major League Baseball. He starts at CU next week.

Rick is the right person to get our athletics program on track. There’s lots to build on, including national champions and conference champions, as well as strong academic performance from our student-athletes. Yet there is also much to be done in terms of facilities, fundraising and business operations.

He is well aware of the challenges, which he prefers to call opportunities, facing our program. In fact, he embraces them. As I have written before, intercollegiate athletics is an important window into our university. I expect that Rick will set us on a course that will allow us to re-energize our athletics program at levels Buff fans have come to expect.
