President Obama's visits highlight importance of affordable education
The University of Colorado has been fortunate to have the president of the United States visit two of its campuses within six months. President Barack Obama's visits to the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Colorado Denver gave our campuses significant positive national exposure and highlighted the university's goal to provide a quality education for an affordable price.
Obama spoke to students, faculty, staff and business leaders at Coors Events Center at CU-Boulder on Tuesday, April 24. It was the first time a sitting president has visited the campus. In his speech to more than 10,000 people, Obama urged Congress to prevent interest rates on the Stafford student loan program from doubling. The current 3.4 percent rate could increase to 6.8 percent on July 1 unless Congress acts.
The president visited the University of Colorado Denver on the Auraria Campus on Wednesday, Oct. 26, talking to thousands about his plan to relieve the burden of student loan debt for up to 1.6 million people. Aside from mortgages, student loans now represent the chief source of debt for American families.
