CU Denver alumnus reaching new heights at Altitude

It's what every college graduate hopes for and what we in academia hope for every graduate: Tyler Kellogg stepped off the stage after receiving his degree in December and into an outstanding career. Now a motion graphic designer with Altitude Sports and Entertainment, Kellogg earned his bachelor of fine arts with an emphasis in digital design. He creates promotional videos for the Altitude network, including highlights, in-game graphics and "anything that's graphics driven," he said.

Kellogg's career at Altitude bridges two of his great passions: motion graphics and hockey. "Altitude was a place where I could watch hockey almost every day and still work in the field I was interested in," he said. "I grew up playing hockey. I played for about 10 years, took a break, and now I'm back."

A Littleton native, Kellogg chose CU Denver because of its location and course offerings. "It was in the city and also one of the only ones offering the kind of degree I was looking for and was geared toward what I was into."

Motion graphics blend video and animation technology to create, essentially, moving art. The skills required include myriad fields of knowledge ranging from art to editing to film technology. Kellogg developed his love for video early on, taking movies of his friends snowboarding or skateboarding. His interest in motion graphics began when he was introduced to graphic design by his older brother, and piqued under the tutelage of instructor Adam Espinoza.

"I always had an interest in motion graphics, but I didn't feel passionate about it until my Motion Design II class with Adam Espinoza," he said. "It really kick-started me into realizing that's what I want to do."

Kellogg interned at CU Online for more than three years. "It was great, a huge learning experience," he said. "I had a chance to have a lot of freedom with a lot of the work I did."

His internship was beneficial to CU Online as well, which recently won a 2012 Silver Telly Award for the "CU Denver Economic Impact" project Kellogg was instrumental in creating.

"It is so gratifying to see someone grow from a student into a young professional," said David Thomas, manager of academic technology. "When Tyler started, he was a snowboarder with a reel that mainly sported video of him riding with his friends. Every semester Tyler worked for us, we watched as he put what he learned in school to work in our projects. We just feel lucky that we got a chance to share in his talent for a few short years."

On cable, Altitude televises Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets games, as well as the Colorado Rapids and Mammoth and, in the summer, golf and one-on-one shows. This summer, Altitude will be reworking its brand identity and, as the Avalanche's season approaches, Kellogg will be instrumental in creating the Avs' motion graphics packages. "I'm really looking forward to that."
