Biotech building meets research needs to address societal challenges
I am excited to announce the opening of the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building on the CU-Boulder campus. The building, dedicated April 26, will revolutionize research and teaching and will facilitate work on a wide range of pressing societal challenges, including biomedical issues such as cancer, heart disease and tissue engineering, and the development of new biofuels. The building will be home to outstanding CU-Boulder researchers, such as Distinguished Professor and Nobel laureate Tom Cech, who directs the Biofrontiers Institute, and Professor Leslie Leinwand, chief scientific officer of the Biofrontiers Institute.
The new $160 million building is being funded by private donations, roughly $48 million to date, as well as $15 million from the National Institutes of Health through the America Recovery and Reinvestment Act and funds from the university and the state of Colorado.
